Day six: Hewett loses out to Oda in the final
Alfie Hewett's quest for a first Japan Open men’s singles title will continue for another year after the British No.1 lost out to second seed and home favourite Tokito Oda 6-1, 7-6(5) on Sunday’s final day of the Super Series tournament in Iizuka City.
Contesting his first Japan Open singles final, Hewett was limited to just to points in the first four games as Oda made a blistering start, but he saved a set point before finally getting on the scoreboard at 5-1, only for an untimely forehand error to then hand Oda the set.
After a medical time out for treatment to his left arm in between sets, Hewett made an impressive start to the second set, his court craft and accuracy helping him to open up a 4-0 lead.
However, Oda slowly started to eat into the top seed’s lead and although Hewett had a set point at 5-4 and broke the Japanese serve to force the second set tie-break, it was not enough in his bid for a fifth singles title and second Super Series title of 2024.

Alfie Hewett will play world No.2 Tokito Oda in Sunday’s men’s singles final at the Japan Open after Hewett and Gordon Reid had their quest for a second Japan Open men’s doubles title ended by Oda and his fellow Japanese Takuya Miki after a thrilling final on the penultimate day of play in Iizuka.
Hewett made it 18 wins from 19 matches against Martin de la Puente as the world No.1 and top seed kept his challenge for a first Japan Open men’s singles title firmly on course with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Spanish third seed.
Hewett converted three of his four break points in the opening set and created 11 opportunities to break in the second set, taking four of them, as he limited De la Puente to just one break in either set and wrapped up victory after an hour and 30 minutes.
Fourth seed and two-time Japan Open champion Reid lost out 6-4, 6-0 to world No.2 and defending champion Oda in the other semi-final and Hewett and Oda will now meet in a Super Series singles final for the third time this season, Oda having won their Melbourne Open decider in January before Hewett came out victorious in last month's Cajun Classic final in the USA to reclaim the world No.1 ranking from Oda.
Hewett and Reid fought hard to try and turn around a 4-1 deficit in the opening set of the men’s doubles final and built on a 4-1 lead of their own to force the deciding match tie-break, but it was the Japanese second seeds who edged to a 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 win for their first win over Hewett and Reid in four finals since their first meeting at Wimbledon last summer.
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid moved to within one match win apiece of setting up a possible all-British men’s singles final at the Japan Open after they each cruised through their respective quarter-finals in straight sets and later combined to book their place in the men’s doubles final.
Hewett’s 41st career match against Joachim Gerard was his first against the Belgian fifth seed at the Japan Open, the world No.1 making it six wins over Gerard this season as he recorded a 6-3,6-2 victory in an hour and 21 minutes. Hewett will now play Spanish third seed Martin de la Puente as he continues his bid for a first Japan Open singles title.
Fourth Reid seed Reid took just 63 minutes to extend his unbeaten career winning streak against Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi to six matches as the two-time Japan Open champion progressed 6-0, 6-2 to earn a last-four meeting with world No.2 and defending Japan Open champion Tokito Oda.
Men’s doubles champions together in Iizuka City in 2018, Hewett and Reid are one win away from a second Japan Open title after defeating the all-Japanese partnership of Daisuke Arai and Takashi Sanada 6-1, 6-3 in this year’s semi-finals.
They will play second seeds Oda and Takuya Miki in the final.
Lucy Shuker and Charlotte Fairbank exited the women's doubles in the semi-finals to second seeds Aniek Van Koot and Saki Takamuro 6-0, 6-1.
Top seed Alfie Hewett continued his dominant start in the men’s singles as the Brits all sealed doubles victories on day three.
Hewett joins fellow Brit Gordon Reid in the quarter-final after breezing past France’s Guilhem Laget 6-0, 6-1 in just 44 minutes.
He sets up a clash against fifth seed Joachim Gerard on Friday, while Reid will play Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi.
The British duo also combined to beat Ruben Spaargaren and Casey Ratzlaff 6-1, 6-1 to progress to the quarter-final of the men’s doubles.
Awaiting them will be fourth seeds and home favourites Daisuke Arai and Takashi Sanada.
Lucy Shuker is through to the semi-finals of the women’s doubles with Charlotte Fairbank after the British-French team came from a set behind to defeat Sakhorn Khanthasit and Emmanuelle Morch 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.
They will play second seeds Aniek Van Koot and Saki Takamuro for a place in the final.
Shuker was also involved in singles action on day three where she narrowly lost to world No.6 Momoko Ohtani 7-6(5), 6-3.
Lucy Shuker made a confident start to her Japan Open women’s singles campaign in the only competitive action for the Brits on the second day of play in Iizuka.
British No.1 Shuker beat Chiyo Sasaki 6-1, 6-2 after converting four of the five break points she earned in the first set of her first career match against Japan’s 24-year-old world No.33.
World No.13 and sixth seed Shuker continued to have the better of the exchanges in the second set, winning 60 per cent of the points as she completed victory in 47 minutes to set up a quarter-final against Japanese second seed Momoko Ohtani.
Alfie Hewett is set to return to court on Thursday’s third day of play, while Gordon Reid has a walkover to face Spain's Daniel Caversaschi in the quarter-finals.
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid dominated their respective Asian opponents on the opening day of the Japan Open as they eased through to the second round of the men’s singles after identical 6-1, 6-0 wins.
World No.1 Hewett, who is aiming for his first Japan Open singles crown and his second Super Series title of 2024, beat Japanese 20-year-old Shogo Takano in his first ever match against Takano. Hewett will go on to play either Frenchman Guilhem Laget or Korean No.3 Ji-Hwan Lee.
Reid, the 2017 and 2018 Japan Open, opened his challenge for a third title in Iizuka by defeating Korean No.2 Sung-Bong Han. The world No.5 and fourth seed will now play Korean No.1 Ho Won Im for a place in the quarter-finals.
Hewett and Reid will also have Im on the opposite side of the net in their opening men’s doubles match. The top seeds and 2018 Japan Open champions have been drawn to play Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi and Im for a place in the quarter-finals.
Lucy Shuker had a first-round bye in the women’s singles and the British No.1 and sixth seed will play Japan’s Chiyo Sasaki in her opening match of the week.
After reaching three women’s doubles finals with three different partners and winning two titles in three tournaments in South Korea en route to Japan, Shuker will leam up with another different partner in Iizuka.
Shuker and Frenchwoman Charlotte Fairbank are fourth seeds for the women’s doubles and have a bye through to the quarter-finals.
